Enabling Guest Wishlists
Overview
Guest Wishlists allow logged-out users to save vehicles without being forced to authenticate upfront. Previously, when a customer clicked the heart icon to save a vehicle, they were immediately prompted to log in, which can introduce friction and interrupt the browsing experience.
With Guest Wishlists enabled, visitors can save vehicles locally in their browser without creating an account. This reduces friction and allows customers to explore your inventory freely.
Prerequisites
Before enabling Guest Wishlists, you must first enable the standard Wishlist feature. See Enabling Wishlists for instructions.
How to Enable
To enable Guest Wishlists:
- Log in to your Dashboard
- Navigate to Settings > Inventory
- Ensure Enable Wishlist is turned ON
- Toggle Allow Guest Wishlist to ON
- Optionally, configure Wishlist: Ask to Create Account to prompt login after a defined number of saves
Note: Settings may take a few minutes to apply.
How It Works
For Visitors
- Logged-out users can click the heart icon on vehicles to save them
- Saved vehicles are stored locally in the user's browser
- Wishlists persist across sessions, allowing customers to continue where they left off
- No account creation required to start saving
Balancing Engagement with Conversion
You can configure a login prompt after a defined number of saves using the Wishlist: Ask to Create Account setting. This balances the browsing experience with encouraging account creation.
For example, setting this to 3 means visitors will be prompted to create an account after saving their third vehicle.
Benefits
- Reduced Friction: Visitors can explore and save vehicles without interruption
- Improved User Experience: Customers can browse freely and build their wishlist before committing to an account
- Better Conversion: By allowing initial engagement without barriers, you can convert browsers into engaged users over time
- Session Persistence: Guest wishlists are saved locally, so customers can return and continue browsing
Technical Details
Guest Wishlists are stored using browser local storage. This means:
- Data persists across browser sessions on the same device
- Wishlists are device-specific (clearing browser data will remove saved items)
- No server storage is used for guest wishlists until the user creates an account
When a guest user creates an account, their locally-saved wishlist items can be synced to their account.
Real-World Example
Here's how one of our clients uses Guest Wishlists:
"Following up on our discussion last week — we've now added support for Guest Wish Lists on the platform. This is an optional feature that can be enabled if and when you'd like to use it.
Previously, when a customer clicked the heart icon to save a vehicle, they were immediately prompted to log in, which can introduce friction and interrupt the browsing experience.
If enabled, Guest Wish Lists allow logged-out users to save vehicles without being forced to authenticate upfront. To balance engagement with conversion, you can also configure a login prompt after a defined number of saves.
Guest Wish Lists are stored locally in the user's browser and persist across sessions, allowing customers to continue where they left off."
